Cleft palate habilitation

Abstract: Presurgical Orthopaedics is any treatment that alters the position of the segments of cleft maxilla in infancy prior to lip and palate reconstruction. There are different approaches, with different mechanics, seeking and achieving different end results. This article describes PNAM, a current approach to the traditional method of presurgical infant orthopaedics for patients with unilateral and bilateral clefts of lip and palate. The goal of PNAM is to align and approximate the alveolar cleft segments while at t… Show more

“…The rationale of "maxillary orthopedics" described by McNiel, Burston and Rosenstein was that alignment of maxillary alveolar cleft segments at an early age will allow the maxillary halves to develop normally in spite of non-bony union. [24] Voluminous literature exists on a wide array of appliances that have been designed for this purpose. Heubner and Liu [25] classified these appliances into presurgical or post-surgical, active or passive, and intraoral or extraoral.…”

“…The management involves team work from varied specialties. The role of the dentist is to introduce information and communicate with the mother as well as adequate nutrition for the infant (10) . Lip surgical operation following presurgical prosthetic interference is performed after optimal jaw alignment is occurred (usually occurred at the age of 3-6 months with unilateral total clefts), there is increase the aesthetic results of the lip that corrected by surgery leading to increase in growth, providing tissues that area unit of redoubled size, a lot of vascular and easier to control.…”
