The problem solved in this research is the diagnosis of the radial clearances in bearing supports and the loosening of fastening bolts due to their plastic elongation (creep) or weak tightening using vibration signals. This is an important issue for the maintenance of the heavy-duty gearboxes of powerful mining machines and rolling mills working in non-stationary regimes. Based on a comprehensive overview of bolted joint diagnostic methods, a solution to this problem based on a developed nonlinear dynamical model of bearing supports is proposed. Diagnostic rules are developed by comparing the changes of natural frequency and its harmonics, the amplitudes and phases of shaft transient oscillations. Then, the vibration signals are measured on real gearboxes while the torque is increasing in the transmission during several series of industrial trials under changing bearings and bolts conditions. In parallel, dynamical torque is measured and its interrelation with vibration is determined. It is concluded that the radial clearances are the most influencing factors among the failure parameters in heavy-duty gearboxes of industrial machines working under impulsive and step-like loading. The developed diagnostics algorithm allows condition monitoring of bearings and fastening bolts, allowing one to undertake timely maintenance actions to prevent failures.

The optical measurement technology could reduce manual work and improve quality in assembly. The confocal scanning scheme is proposed to measure the narrow gap in-line but it is hard to identify the edges of a gap. This paper proposed an edge definition and presented an edge identification method for gap measurement. The edge profile is defined as a part of a circle, which could be identified by the shutter time feature. The defined edge point could be calculated by fitting the edge profile, and then the width of a gap section is calculated by two edge points. The width of a gap can be evaluated by the average of several gap section. The experimental results indicate that the repeatability of the method is less than 2 µm and the precision of the measurement is higher than ±2.5 µm. The proposed method is feasible for in-line measurement application in assembly.

Piezoelectric transducer wafers are usually used in pairs to adjust the resonant cavity length of the ring laser gyro. In practice, the paired wafers are required to have similar piezoelectric charge coefficient d31. To handle the pairing operation in-batch, an automatic sorting system was developed on the basis of deformation measurement, which adopted a frame of a Cartesian-coordinate robot. The wafers were self-aligned in the vertical direction, and a vacuum holder was used to pick up, transfer, and then place them on thee testing desk one by one. The excitation voltage was loaded on the wafer by a specifically designed electrode, and the resulting micro deformation was measured by dual opposite inductive micrometers using the relative measurement principle. This particular electrode has the function of attitude self-adjustment and vacuum adsorption, which is conducive to loading the voltage reliably and protecting the wafer from undesired damage. Finally, the wafers were transported to different stock bins based on the measuring results. This system is suited to handle a mass of wafers by continuous processing on site for its high reliability and measurement consistency. The measurement accuracy, validated by laser interferometry, was better than 0.5 μm and the repeatability was superior to 0.1 μm.
