Clear cell tubopapillary renal cell carcinoma mimicking polycystic kidney disease: A case report

Abstract: Clear cell tubopapillary renal cell carcinoma (CCTP-RCC) is a distinct histologic subtype of RCC recognized for its unique clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features. A 72-year-old man with presumed polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and bilateral clear cell RCC (CC-RCC) underwent left radical nephrectomy and right partial nephrectomy 20 years ago at an outside hospital. On surveillance imaging, RCC recurrence was suspected and right radical nephrectomy was performed. Histologic and gross examination of t… Show more

“…Seventy-eight percent (7/9) of the cases were radical nephrectomy specimens versus 22% (2/ 9) partial nephrectomy specimens, with near equal laterality. Most cases (8/9, 89%) consisted of a single dominant tumour (median size: 2.4 cm; range: 0.8 to 6.7 cm), with one case showing numerous clear cell tubulopapillary renal cell tumours (range: 0.1-3.7 cm) (this case has been previously reported 16 ). Of the 'pT3a' features, adipose tissue involvement predominated (eight cases; four into perinephric adipose tissue and four into hilar adipose tissue); the majority of which demonstrated 'bulging' extension into the adipose tissue (i.e.…”
