Clear-cell carcinoma of the ovary

Abstract: Clear-cell carcinoma of the ovary (CCCO) is a distinct entity of epithelial ovarian cancer in terms of clinical, histopathological, or genetic features. The incidence of CCCO is different by ethnicity but the reason is not clear yet. Overall prognosis of CCCO is good because most CCCO is found in stage I. However, advanced disease is associated with a very poor prognosis and resistance to standard treatment. The same is true for recurrent disease. Therefore, genetic analysis of CCCO is important to find the ri… Show more

“…9,10 OCCC is rarely bilateral, and patients are usually diagnosed at an early stage. 11 Histologic features of OCCC are characterized by solid, papillary, and tubulocystic patterns. 12 Most OCCCs are presumed to arise from endometriotic cysts, 13 and key driver events involving HN-F1B overexpression and somatic ARID1A mutations have been identified.…”

“…Endometriosis is a condition of ectopic endometrial tissue, o en resulting in infertility. Although rare, 2.5% of ovarian endometriosis cases result in malignant transformation mostly due to K-ras associated mutation and o en are diagnosed at a relatively early age [13,14]. ese patients o en have a better prognosis than women with malignant ovarian cancer without endometriosis [15].…”

“…2 Ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) has unique features, and has an incidence of 23% in Japan, but at most 10% in North America and Europe. 3 Thus, OCCC is categorized as a rare gynecologic disease. The molecular background of OCCC is unique, since the tumor is usually negative for p53 mutations, despite these being common in high-grade EOC, and positive for ARID1A and/or PIK3CA mutations.…”
