CLEAR CELL ADENOCARCINOMA OF THE FEMALE URETHRA A Case Report

Abstract: A case of urethral clear cell adenocarcinoma (mesonephric carcinoma) in a 62‐year‐old woman is reported. The patient consulted our hospital because of acute urinary retention. Fine needle aspiration cytology showed a few atypical cells; loose cluster cells with finely vacuolated cytoplasm, large nuclei and prominent nucleoli, and small cluster cells with finely vacuolated, delicate cytoplasm, small pale nuclei and small nucleoli. Cytologic diagnosis was adenocarcinoma and no diagnosis of clear cell adenocarcin… Show more

“…The morphologic similarities between 'nephrogenic adenoma' and well-differentiated clear cell adenocarcinomas and the difficulties in separating both lesions have been repeatedly stressed [10,11,19]. Association of urethral clear cell adenocarcinomas with so-called nephrogenic metaplasia -as observed in the present case -was also reported by others [7,14]; the report of Rivard and Waisman [5] showed a figure with a lesion that unequivocally represents a nephrogenic metaplasia of the papillary subtype in association with a 'mesonephric carcinoma'. In support of the hypothesis that clear cell adenocarcinomas may develop from preexisting nephrogenic metaplasia following malignant transformation are the cellular atypias identified within the nephrogenic lesion present in the current case.…”

“…FNAC for urethral lesions have been reported. [12][13][14][15] We do not believe that FNAC would result in a fistula. In addition, as surgery is the treatment of choice for urethral carcinoma, the whole region would be included in the surgical excision.…”
