We examined 53 cases and cited 18 in the body of the paper (also listed in Table 1) as examples to illustrate the conceptual framework. The table below lists the cases in alphabetical order, highlighting the 18. We scanned the literature describing all the cases, and extracted specific narratives for each element of the framework using the following methodology:• Natural science: We looked for literature that described and/or critiqued the scientific risk assessment process.• Risk decision: We identified sections that discussed how the relocation decision occurred and how it played out at various levels-government, community, and household/individual.• Community's relationship to place: We looked for descriptions of livelihood, lifestyle, cultural, historical, and emotional dimensions of place attachment.• Relocation process: We searched for discussions on funding/finance for relocation, property rights/tenure and the logistics of relocation, including transitional stages.• Historical, social, and political context: Social science critiques of relocation directly address context in multiple dimensions. We carefully reviewed the other types of literature to identify contextual influences on the relocation decision and process. It is important to note that our method relied on careful reading and interpretation of the selected texts rather than on systematic keyword searches. This is because the cases describe a variety of different types and qualities of qualitative issues rather than statistical data. # Case name Disaster and location Hazard Affected settlements Relocation description 1.
