CLCA2 expression is associated with survival among African American women with triple negative breast cancer

Abstract: Black/African American (AA) women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) compared to whites, an aggressive breast cancer subtype associated with poor prognosis. There are no routinely used targeted clinical therapies for TNBC; thus there is a clear need to identify prognostic markers and potential therapeutic targets.

“…Since the effect of ERK1/2 and ERK5 pathways on EMT is less well-understood in TNBCs, we first used publicly available datasets from Purrington, K. S. and colleagues [22] to correlate MAPK3 (ERK1), MAPK1(ERK2), or MAPK7 (ERK5) gene expression with EMT markers CDH1 (E-cadherin), ZEB1, or vimentin in primary, invasive tumors derived from African-American TNBC patients ( Fig. 1 ).…”

“…The survival analysis of TNBC has gotten enough attention from researchers around the world due to its severity and poor survival outcome. There are several studies focusing on the roles of clinical and treatment factors ( Xiao, 2016 ; Kim et al, 2019 ; Wen et al, 2020 ), radiomics features ( Kim S. et al, 2020 ; Koh et al, 2020 ), circulating tumor cells ( Karhade, 2012 ), and gene expressions ( Kim et al, 2016 ; Purrington et al, 2020 ; Wu et al, 2020 ) in the survival prognosis of TNBC. The research groups of these studies tried to find the significant risk factors for TNBC survival and further contributed to the treatment of TNBC.…”

“…Beyond surgical resection and chemoradiotherapy, a variety of new treatment methods have helped improve BC patient prognosis and the cure rate of advanced patients [16]. Endocrine and targeted therapies for BC have made progress, and traditional Chinese medicine also has unique advantages in the fight against advanced BC [17]. A variety of traditional Chinese medicine extracts, such as the active triterpenoid monomer compound KHF16, have significant anti-tumor effects and inhibit BC cell proliferation [18,19].…”
