In Epith. 1-46, Claudian narrates Honorius’ impatience for his wedding to his betrothed spouse, Maria. In the half passage (1-19) we hear the poet’s voice, while in the remainder it is that of the young emperor (20-46), who expresses his complaints towards Maria’s parents, Stilicho and Serena. Claudian presents Honorius as an elegiac lover, who suffers due to his romantic passion. My paper aims to reveal this passage’s generic interaction between elegy and epic. We will see that Honorius’ love behaviour wavers between his elegiac persona and his epical reality. Furthermore, I attempt to prove that in these verses, Claudian includes a metapoetic discourse on the impact of Callimachean theory within his poetics.

Il volume presenta gli Atti del Convegno tenutosi a Nijmegen, nei Paesi Bassi, tra il 24 e il 26 ottobre del 2012. Una preziosa nota introduttiva (1-6) ne chiarisce la genesi, fondata sul canone unitario, «at the basis of any successful state or nation. Without unity, states cannot survive» (Dijkstra/van Poppel/Slootjes 2015, 1). La divisione interna è bipartita tra una sezione iniziale, più generica e dalle forti tinte programmatiche (Geo-political Developments, 7-96), e una seconda tematica, corredata da esempi indicativi (Unity in the Fourth Century: Four Case Studies, 97-179). Un Index finale riporta i concetti e i nomi dei personaggi e dei luoghi citati (181-183).Nel IV secolo d.C. ebbe un'importanza centrale l'ascesa del cristianesimo, sia sul piano politico che religioso: dopo la feroce politica persecutoria di Diocleziano (Shin 2018), Costantino I la rese una religio licita, con l'editto di Milano del 313 (Guidetti 2013). I due cardini della sua politica si possono identificare nel trasferimento della capitale a Bisanzio (Dagron 1991; Morrisson/Sodini 2018) e nel riconoscimento della libertà di culto ai cristiani (Boin 2015).La Chiesa però incontrò grosse difficoltà a causa della diffusione delle eresie, in particolare quella ariana (Simonetti 1975). Costantino I anche in quella occasione dimostrò la sua politica interventista: sconfitto Licinio nella battaglia di Crisopoli, nel 325 organizzò il concilio di Nicea, che stabiliva la vera natura di Cristo e condannava l'arianesimo (Pietras 2001). Tuttavia questo si era propagato tra gli eserciti, peraltro assai sensibili anche al culto mitraico (Gordon 2009), nelle province e a corte, sì che Costanzo II avrebbe fatto abrogare il provvedimento conciliare (Cracco Ruggini 1989). Strenui difensori dell'ortodossia furono Atanasio, vescovo di Alessandria (Heil 2018), ed Ilario di Poitiers (Bodrožić 2014).Nel 380 l'editto di Tessalonica (Cunctos populos), emanato da Teodosio I, elesse il cristianesimo a religione ufficiale dell'impero (Escribano Paño 1999), per cui Onorio e Teodosio II poterono proclamare che non v'era più traccia del paganesimo (Cod. Theod. 16, 10, 22). Il IV secolo, del resto, annoverò figure carismatiche come i Padri della Chiesa (Basilio il Grande, Gregorio di Nissa e Gregorio Nazianzeno), Ambrogio, Girolamo ed Agostino di Ippona, ma nonostante l'oramai palese rotazione prospettica non si smarriva la memoria storica: lo stesso Ambrogio, ad esempio, sottolineava la necessità di continuare a coltivare i valori tradizionali, nonostante i mutata tempora (Breuer 2021).
