This paper develops a simple model that analyses the relationship between a country's oil endowment and the duration of its autocratic leader. The dictator uses the rents from oil extraction for both personal gain and to pay-off potential opposition and chooses an optimal level of oil exploitation. A group of kingmakers, on the other side, decides whether to stage a coup d'état and establish a new dictator. The relationship between oil endowment and the duration of the dictatorial regime is modulated by the price of oil. Applying an empirical survival model on data for the duration of 106 dictatorships supports the predictions of the theoretical model.

RESUMENEste artículo presenta una discusión teórica sobre las formas de clasificar la democracia subnacional de acuerdo con autores que han examinado el tema en América Latina. La discusión evidencia los límites e imprecisiones que tienen la mayoría de conceptos para aprehender conceptual y empíricamente el cambio en el tiempo de las variaciones de la democracia subnacional y propone el concepto de trayectorias de desarrollo para estudiar este fenómeno. Dicho concepto se testea de manera empírica por medio del estudio de caso de la democracia subnacional en Colombia, comparando la forma agregada de estudiar la democracia colombiana que se ha realizado en distintas investigaciones sobre la materia y el group-based trajectory modeling, el cual permite observar que el desarrollo de la democracia subnacional en Colombia ha sido heterogéneo y se caracteriza por tener distintas trayectorias de apertura y estabilidad en el ámbito local.Palabras clave: democracia subnacional, trayectorias de desarrollo, partidos políticos. DEVELOPMENT TRA JECTORIES: A NOVEL WAY OF CONCEPTUALIZING VARIATIONS OF SUBNATIONAL DEMOCRACY IN COLOMBIA, 1988 -2015 ABSTRACTThis article provides a theoretical discussion with regard to means of classifying subnational democracy developed by authors who have investigated this phenomenon in Latin America. The discussion evinces the limitations and lack of precision apparent in a majority of the perceptions that seek to conceptually and empirically grasp the nature of change over time in variations of subnational democracy and proposes as a means of studying this phenomenon the concept of "development trajectories". The concept is tested empirically through a case study of subnational democracy in Colombia comparing the aggregate method of studying Colombian democracy carried out in different studies on this topic with group-based trajectory modeling, concluding with the observation that development of subnational democracy in Colombia has been heterogeneous and characterized by differing trajectories of openness and stability at the local level.

This study examines the effects of democratization on the size and composition of government expenditure using the data of 125 countries between 1972 and 2010 at most. Specifically, we focus not only on the total expenditure but also on their composition and employ dichotomous indices of political regimes rather than score indices. Moreover, we construct instruments for democratization based on the democratization wave and conduct an instrumental variables estimation to address endogeneity problems. Our results show that while democratization does not have a significant impact on total expenditure, it increases expenditure on health and education and decreases expenditure on defense. Furthermore, considering the time-varying effect of democratization, defense expenditure starts decreasing immediately after a regime change and health expenditure increases in the medium and long run, while they do not significantly vary before a regime change. Thus, while focusing only on total expenditure does not uncover the effects of democratization, considering detailed categories of government expenditure enables us to understand how democratization changes governments' behaviors.
