Classification of Postaxial Polydactyly of the Foot

Abstract: Based on the morphologic, radiographic, and operative findings, we suggest a classification method of postaxial polydactyly of the foot. We believe this is a straightforward and useful method for the treatment of postaxial polydactyly.

“…Polydactyly is a common, congenital condition, characterized by the presence of one or more supernumerary digits, with or without duplication of the corresponding metatarsal or phalanges. [2][3][4][5] It is more common in upper limbs than in lower limbs, right hand than left hand and left foot than right foot. 4 There is tremendous variation in the extent of duplication, ranging from minor cutaneous protuberance, to duplication of a single phalanx, to complete duplication of the digit and metacarpal or metatarsal, and may result in a functional digit.…”

“…4 There is tremendous variation in the extent of duplication, ranging from minor cutaneous protuberance, to duplication of a single phalanx, to complete duplication of the digit and metacarpal or metatarsal, and may result in a functional digit. [3][4][5][6] Multiple classification systems describe pedal polydactyly, and these primarily classify the condition along topographic and morpho-anatomical criteria. 4 The Temtamy-McKusick classification is widely used, breaking the condition into preaxial (superfluous toe adjacent to the first ray), postaxial (adjacent to the fifth ray) and central (adjacent to rays two to four).…”
