Classification of odontogenic cysts and tumors – Antecedents

Abstract: Pierre Paul Broca produced a monograph on tumor classification which also included the classification of odontogenic tumors (OTs). The terminology used to describe malignant epithelial OTs has varied since the World Health Organization published the initial consensus on the taxonomy of OTs. Minor changes were introduced in the second edition. It is only in the very recent years that additional knowledge has accumulated and refined the classification. This review emphasizes on reasons for modification by each a… Show more

“…Some originate from the remnants of odontogenic epithelium that are laid down after the completion of tooth development while others develop from the malignant transformation of a cyst or tumor. [8] ACA is a rare entity that is challenging to diagnose, especially when spindle cells are present in a conventional SMA. In addition, there are no standardized microscopic criteria to distinguish ACA histopathologically from aggressive SMA.…”

“…The development of the lesion may be mild, long-term or aggressive and rapid, infiltration of adjacent tissues and presence of satellite microcysts are also possible. The growth of OKC is usually asymptomatic, so it is often discovered incidentally during radiographic examinations performed for other reasons [ 6 10 ]. The treatment of choice should be done with complete enucleation of the lesion with possible extension of the procedure to peripheral bone curettage, decompression, marsupialisation, application of Carnoy's fluid or cryodestruction.…”
