Classification of indoor daylight enhancement systems

Abstract: In a dense urban environment, sky obstruction caused by high rise buildings causes minimal daylighting for interiors on lower floors and in deep interior spaces. Innovative daylighting systems can be used to enhance daylighting indoors using available sunlight. This paper presents an overview of recent developments of innovative daylighting systems. The daylighting systems, which are classified as light guiding, light transport, light diffracting, hybrid and integrated systems, have been reviewed and a compari… Show more

“…For each layer, component matrices R f f , T f b , T b f , R bb of a size determined by the chosen target resolution are filled by sampling the tensor-tree for all pairs of incident and outgoing directions. The propagation matrix Λ is initialized (see Equation (5)) according to chosen resolution k. The components of the BSDF S are calculated according to Equation (3). The resulting components are again flipped to match the different conventions of front and back side in RADIANCE.…”

“…Only the distributions over the transmission hemisphere are plotted, although all four components of the BSDF L s are computed and required according to Equation (3). The scattering layer of CFS1 shows no distinct peak in the transmission distribution as direct transmission is blocked at the the high elevation angle θ i = 50 • (a).…”

“…The most efficient daylighting systems for moderate climates seem to be automatically controlled blinds and louvres, because of their flexibility to respond to different daylighting conditions. A recent literature review (Nair et al, 2013) concluded that active systems, with for example sun tracking mirrors or lenses, can optimally collect daylight and with this offer high energy saving potential. Nonetheless, they are typically complex and relatively expensive and require regular maintenance.…”
