Classification of adsorbed protein static ToF‐SIMS spectra by principal component analysis and neural networks

Abstract: Analysis of the static time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) spectra of adsorbed protein films is reported using principal component analysis (PCA) and a novel artificial neural network (ANN) approach, NeuroSpectraNet, to classify chemically the spectra of the protein films. The ease of application and the efficiency with which each approach classified positive ion spectra from adsorbed films of 13 different proteins is reported and assessed. The ToF-SIMS spectra of adsorbed protein films a… Show more

“…Sanni et al 167 employed ANN to differentiate between 13 different protein films, including two types of antibodies, using nominal mass values of all mass fragments available in the spectra. ANN was able to identify the key mass fragments associated with each of the proteins to employed ANNs to discriminate between an antibody and its proteolysis fragments adsorbed to silicon substrates, based solely on their ToF-SIMS spectra.…”

“…C x H y N þ fragments show up as well in the mass spectra although C x H y N þ type fragments are meant to be amino acid compounds from the organic part of the bone. 25 But due to the addition of several chemical compounds for the polymerization process like hardener (Tetramethylaniline, for example), accelerator [trisdimethyl(aminomethyl)phenol], or stabilizers, the presence of nitrogen containing fragments also deriving from the resin must be taken into account-for Epon as well as for Technovit.…”
