Classification and Radiological Diagnosis of Thoracolumbar Spine Fractures: WFNS Spine Committee Recommendations

Abstract: The aim of this review to determine recommendations for classification and radiological diagnosis of thoracolumbar spine fractures. Recommendation was made through a literature review of the last 10 years. The statements created by the authors were discussed and voted on during 2 consensus meetings organized by the WFNS (World Federation Neurosurgical Societies) Spine Committee. The literature review was yielded 256 abstracts, of which 32 were chosen for full-text analysis. Thirteen papers evaluated the reliab… Show more

“…To assist in the diagnosis and treatment of vertebral fractures, many classification systems for vertebral fractures have been developed (3)(4)(5)(6). In 2013, Vaccaro et al incorporated a modified classification system called the AOSpine thoracolumbar spine injury classification system (7), which is a widely accepted and comprehensive classification system used for clinical practice and research (8,9).…”

“…Reports of a high prevalence of lumbar spine abnormalities seen on MRI in asymptomatic subjects are also available (Hebelka H et al, 2019;Jiang X, Chen D et al, 2018;Kim JH et al, 2018). In addition, a false positive imaging on MRI can lead to inappropriate therapy, increase the cost of treatment and result in suboptimal treatment (Bajamal AH et al, 2021).…”
