Classification and Phytogeography of Larch Forests of Northeast Asia

Abstract: This study focuses on a phytosociological system of the extensive Larix gmelinii and Larix cajanderi dominated forests and woodlands that span the nemoral, boreal and subarctic zones in northeast Asia in the Russian Far East, Eastern Siberia and northern China, an area that covers more than 5 million km 2 . A total of 299 relevés representing different parts of the larch forest range were used to classify communities in this area into the boreal Rhytidio rugosi-Laricetea sibiricae and Vaccinio-Piceetea and to … Show more

“…New results of north boreal forests classification published recently (Ermakov et al 2002;Krestov et al 2009) support a new concept of higher units of the eastern part of the Vaccinio-Piceetea range in Northern Eurasia. This concept is mainly based on two peculiar bioclimatic geographical types of boreal vegetation occurring in cold continental and ultracontinental climate of Eastern Siberia, on seasonally frozen soils and permafrost: (1) Zonal summer-green coniferous forests with a predominance of hygromesic cold resistant plants (the order Ledo-Laricetalia cajanderi).…”

“…Based on the traditional syntaxonomic system (Kim et al 1986;Krestov et al 2006Krestov et al , 2009Hattori et al 2012), we attempted to present a full syntaxonomic scheme used for the description of zonal forest vegetation in the Korean Peninsula. (Table 1).…”
