FAMILY BACKGROUND I was born in Chicago, IL, on September 14, 1938. My namesake was my mother's uncle, Thomas Bayliff, who died November 13, 1909, in the underground inferno of the Cherry Mine Disaster in Cherry, IL. In all, 259 boys and men perished. My maternal grandmother was born in a village near Stockholm, Sweden, and my maternal grandfather came from Sedbergh, England. Both paternal grandparents were from Vršac, Serbia. Mom and Dad were born in Chicago in 1904 and 1907, respectively. They married in 1932. In 1959, Mom was seriously ill from high-output heart failure due to Graves' disease and was treated with radioactive iodine. The hyperactive thyroid state was corrected, but in time, she became severely myxedematous. Mom died in 1970. Dad was a natural and gifted pianist with perfect pitch who transposed music with ease. He saw to it that I received years of formal classical instruction. He passed away in 1983. Mom transmitted a reverence for reading, and Dad shared his love for music and the piano. Both instilled the importance of an education that they made possible by considerable sacrifice. My sister, born in 1943, was hospitalized with croup at 4 months of age; she and several other infants died from an infection in the pediatric unit. My brother, born in 1945, passed away in 2009. Because both parents worked, we 2 boys were raised, to a large extent, by our Swedish grandmother, who lived in our home for years after the death of her husband.
