“…Atherosclerosis has been reported to start as fatty streak lesions which contain foam cells, mainly of macrophage origin (14). The urgency of elucidating the mechanisms by which macrophages become foam cells and help to drive this pathology is a persistent need often voiced in the literature in this research field.…”

“…But merely determining the expression level for several genes chosen in advance is not sufficient to actually characterize cells, since in response to a given stimulus genes are often expressed in several different organs. Taking SR-A for example, it has recently been reported that PMA stimulation also induced SR-A expression in smooth muscle cells (14), making detection of SR-A difficult to employ as a specific macrophage differentiation marker. Thus, a method to study many genes at once became necessary, and we decided to use oligonucleotide microarray analysis to characterize THP-1 cells and their differentiated form The number under monocyte, GM-CSF 3d, GM-CSF 7d, THP-1, THP1PMA 7d denotes the average difference of each gene.…”

“…These studies raised the question of why SRA1 is induced in VSMCs, and one possibility is that in the apoptotic environment of the VSMC nodule, oxidative stress would be expected, which is a known inducer of expression of SRA in VSMCs. 25 Treatment of nodules with PI inhibited acLDL-induced stimulation of calcification. Although PI is not a specific SRA ligand, these results suggest that acLDL may interact with SRA1 to stimulate calcification.…”

“…In this study, the levels of CD36 mRNA and protein, both of which were expressed in a constitutive manner, did not change following UA treatment (Fig. 5A), while a previous study found that ligandbinding induced oxidative stress up-regulated SR gene expression, thereby promoting the uptake of oxLDL (44).…”
