Clarivate's New Generative AI Reading Engagement Platform

Abstract

During the 2023-24 academic year, Florida Gulf Coast University piloted education start-up Pangea's reading engagement tool, Alethea, which incorporates generative AI (GPT-4). The development partnership with FGCU was a contributing factor in Clarivate's purchase of Pangea. The results of the pilot have been extraordinary. Using FGCU library as a case study, this chapter describes a development partnership with commercial products integrating AI. The case study describes how the product has been utilized, the role of librarians in implementation, findings from multiple studies, including encouraging results of a mixed methods study in which 85% of students reported Alethea helped them understand and recall important themes and main ideas from course reading material. Faculty using Alethea reported student mastery of threshold concepts as described within the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy.
