After the first World Cup 1987, rugby undergoes rule revisions aimed at more dynamic games. There have been some analyses of the KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) so far, but not many ones as detailed dynamic network structure of tactics concerned with selected attack and defense areas, plays, and human resources. In current study, the tactics for try in Rugby World Cup 2019 was investigated by network centrality, core-periphery analysis and correspondence analysis. Bootstrap test and ROC analysis were used to validate the data of try contribution structure. The average score of try balance of final 8 teams was "3.94" and that of "not win" teams was "-2.23". We categorized these indices into team performance, and tested Monte Carlo methods with bootstrap hypothesis testing to assess the standardized values. Furthermore, to test the precision of sensitivity and specificity of standardized try balance values, the Area Under the Curve (AUC) of the receiver-operator curve (ROC) analysis was executed. In final 8 stage, the feature of tactics for try in first 20 minutes and last 20 minutes were analyzed. The results suggested the tactics of "attack channel diversity" in first 20 minutes and tactics of "defense and substitute diversity" in last 20 minutes. In addition, network correspondence analysis of the top 4 teams' performance in the tournament yielded interesting results regarding tactics of the attack and defense methods, and of the transition of human resources.

The aim of this study was to grasp the injury situation of Japanese female rugby players in 2020-2021 by network analysis with psychological condition under COVID19 (June 1-30, 2021). The number of respondents was 302. 60% reported serious injuries. The parts were ankle, knee, shoulder, head, etc. Symptoms are ligament / bone / muscle damage or concussion. The caused plays were tackle/tackled, running with no physical contact, etc. There were 39 head injuries. Some ones played while continuing long-term treatment such as knees and ankles. Approximate 40 % of players injured once were injured twice again, and approximate 40% of players injured twice were injured a third time. 30% of all respondents had some chronic symptoms. Network analysis revealed a structure with multiple chronic symptoms (head, shoulders, knees, ankles), a structure of multiple parts of injuries in a single play, and a structure in which the same parts were repeatedly injured in a year. Some players suffered concussions after knee injuries. It suggested the possibility that the physical safety management skills to protect the head might be inferior due to insufficient recovery of knee function as a negative injury chain structure.

3D Biomechanics of Rugby Tackle Techniques to Inform Future Rugby Research Practice: a Systematic Review

Background The tackle is the most common in-play event in rugby union and rugby league (the rugby codes). It is also associated with the greatest propensity for injury and thus accounts for the most injuries in the sport. It is therefore of critical importance to accurately quantify how tackle technique alters injury risk using gold-standard methodology of three-dimensional motion (3D) capture. Objective To examine the 3D motion capture methodology of rugby-style tackle techniques to provide recommendations to inform practice for future rugby code research and advance the knowledge of this field. Study Design Systematic review. Methods Articles published in English language, up to May 2020, were retrieved via nine online databases. All cross-sectional, correlational, observational, and cohort study designs using 3D motion capture of tackle techniques in rugby code players met inclusion criteria for this review. A qualitative synthesis using thematic analysis was pre-specified to identify five key themes. Results Seven articles met eligibility criteria. Participant demographic information (theme one) involved a total of 92 rugby union players, ranging in skill level and playing experience. Experimental task design information (theme two) included one-on-one, front-on (n=5) or side-on (n=1) contact between a tackler and a ball carrier, or a tackler impacting a tackle bag or bump pad (n=3). 3D data collection (theme three) reported differing sampling frequencies and marker sets. 3D data reduction and analysis (theme four) procedures could be mostly replicated, but the definitions of temporal events, joint modelling and filtering varied between studies. Findings of the studies (theme five) showed that the one-on-one tackle technique can be altered (n=5) when tackle height, leg drive and/or tackle speed is modified. A study reported tackle coaching intervention. Conclusions This is the first review to evaluate 3D motion capture of rugby-style tackle technique research. A research framework was identified: (i) participant demographic information, (ii) experimental task design information, (iii) 3D motion capture data specifications, and (iv) 3D data reduction and analysis. Adherence of future 3D tackling research to these framework principles will provide critical scientific evidence to better inform injury reduction and performance practices in the rugby codes. Trial Registration The review was registered with PROSPERO (registration number CRD42018092312).
