Claimed effects, outcome variables and methods of measurement for health claims on foods related to the gastrointestinal tract proposed under regulation (EC) 1924/2006

Abstract: Most of the requests of authorisation to the use of health claims pursuant to Regulation EC 1924/2006 related to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract have received a negative opinion by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), mainly because of an insufficient substantiation of the claimed effect (CE). The present manuscript refers to the collection, collation and critical analysis of outcome variables (OVs) and methods of measurement (MMs) related to the GI tract compliant with Regulation 1924/2006. The critical… Show more

“…The antioxidant potential of CoQ10 was further evaluated in a pilot study (Chiu et al, 2008) on 11 patients with Rett Syndrome, a severe neurodevelopmental disorder in which hypoxia-induced oxidative stress associates with the pathogenesis and the disease progression (De Felice et al, 2012;Di Pierro et al, 2020). After 12-month CoQ10 intake (300 mg/day), there was a significant improvement in red blood cells' energy status, suggesting an attenuation of the oxidative stress (De Felice et al, 2012Biasini et al, 2018).…”

“…The EU-wide framework for nutritional and health claims is a challenging case for probiotics and prebiotics in foods and food supplements. In this market, probiotic and prebiotic effects have been largely rejected by assessment panels for health claims, with notable exceptions [155,156], despite being based upon otherwise peer-reviewed scientific evidence, exploiting up-to-date technologies and being, in many cases, mechanistically driven [155][156][157].…”

“…As highlighted in specific reviews, few applications for prebiotics and probiotics have been successful, lacking either sufficient characterisation, a beneficial effect for human health, establishment of a cause-and-effect relationship, or biological plausibility [146,[155][156][157][158]. This limited positive track record creates a high uncertainty and unpredictability, especially for future applicants in the always-evolving field of human health and nutrition.…”

“…It becomes more complex when there is conflicting evidence and conflicting ways for evaluating them. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) had a negative opinion about most of the requests of authorization to the use of health claims related to the GI tract, mainly due to an insufficient substantiation of the claimed effect [124]. More questions are needed to be addressed.…”
