Cladotanytarsus crassus, a new North American non-biting midge with a distinctive hypopygial digitus (Diptera: Chironomidae)

Abstract: Cladotanytarsus (Cladotanytarsus) crassus sp. n. is described from the USA (Oregon, Wyoming) and Canada (Ontario). The distinctive structure of the adult male hypopygium, bearing a thickset digitus and a stout elongated superior volsella, is presented. Intraspecific morphological variations are described in order to compare C. crassus and C. nigrovittatus (Goetghebuer, 1922), treated as close relatives. The geographical distribution and ecology of the two species are commented on.

“…In Riethia , a lobe called the digitus bears simple and/or pectinate (“moth-like”) setae or scales [ 16 ], while among Tanytarsini (here considered the only Chironominae having a true digitus) no such structures have been observed, aside from small humps or swellings on the smooth/bare surface (cf. [ 19 , 20 ]), or, exceptionally, a single fine seta or minute serrations at most [ 21 , 22 ] ( Fig 11 ).…”

“…Finally, the males of C. mancus (Walker, 1856) [or the C. mancus group sensu Giłka (2001)], often misidentified with C. nigrovittatus, should also be included in this comparison. They differ in the length proportions of the median volsella stem-lamellae (the stem longer relative to its lamellae in C. bilyji), the number of lamellae (greater in C. bilyji), and the arrangement of median setae on the anal tergite (dispersed in C. mancus).…”
