Cladistic Analysis of Phylogenetic Relationships Among Tribes Cicereae, Trifolieae, and Vicieae (Leguminosae)

Abstract: A cladistic analysis of tribes Cicereae, Trifolieae, and Vicieae was carried out using 33 morphological, anatomical, karyological, and chemotaxonomical characteristics. Transformation polarities of the character states were developed by comparison with the character states of the genus Galega, the sister group of the tribes. Cicereae and Vicieae were found to be a monophyletic group, and Trifolieae was its sister group. The seven synapomorphic characters of Cicereae and Vicieae were presumed to be: germination… Show more

“…may provide a link (Kupicha, 1974(Kupicha, , 1976. This relationship is corroborated by stylar morphology (Endo and Ohashi, 1997) and matK data (Steele and Wojciechowski, 2003), but such evidence is still patchy and a targeted study of the phenomenon remains to be undertaken. Given the striking similarities in evolutionary history between Vicia and Lathyrus, this is an intriguing area for future investigation of the two genera.…”

“…Tribe Fabeae is composed of five genera; two larger genera, Lathyrus L. The tribe is morphologically characterized by paripinnate, often tendrillous, leaves and a pubescent style or a pollen brush (Lavin and Delgado 1990). It is regarded as a rather advanced tribe in the Leguminosae and has been considered to be monophyletic (Kupicha 1981;Lavin and Delgado 1990;Endo and Ohashi 1997b;Lock and Maxted 2005). The monophyly of Fabeae has been supported by results from molecular phylogenetic analyses (Wojciechowski et al 2000;Steele and Wojciechowski 2003).…”

“…On the abaxial surface of a cotyledon blade of mature seeds of the Vicioid clade (sensu Sanderson and Wojciechowski, 1995) of Leguminosae, we (Endo and Ohashi, 1997) found an oval area, which is distinguished from the surrounding area by having granular projections of epidermal cells. We have named the area ''cotyledon areole'' because we could not find any publication of such surface ornamentation on legume cotyledons.…”

“…To observe the seed cotyledons, we softened the seeds by soaking them in 50% aqueous ethanol for Ͼ1 d. For SEM, we used the same method of pretreatment as used by Endo and Ohashi (1997). To observe the anatomical structure of cotyledons by SEM, we made sections of cotyledons with a razor blade before critical-point drying.…”
