Cladding Mode Fitting-Assisted Automatic Refractive Index Demodulation Optical Fiber Sensor Probe Based on Tilted Fiber Bragg Grating and SPR

Abstract: In the paper based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG), a novel algorithm is proposed, which facilitates demodulation of surrounding refractive index (SRI) via cladding mode interrogation and accelerates calibration and measurement of SRI. Refractive indices with a tiny index step of 2.2 × 10−5 are prepared by the dilution of glucose aqueous solution for the test and the calibration of this fiber sensor probe. To accelerate the calibration process, automatic selection of t… Show more

“…The cladding mode envelope was also used to determine the cross-correlation function and calculate its statistical parameters [9]. One of the recently proposed methods is to determine the most sensitive mode and then use it to determine the SRI value [10]; another method is to calculate the length of the optical spectrum [11]. To avoid selecting the single most sensitive resonance, a method of tracking 27 cladding mode resonances to distinguish two slightly different SRI values was proposed [12].…”

“…The use of mode amplitude changes as an indicator of SRI can be preceded by an analysis of the sensitivity of a certain range of modes. Such a procedure indicates the most sensitive mode and improves the resolution of the method [ 19 ].…”
