CK19-positive Hepatocellular Carcinoma is a Characteristic Subtype

Abstract: The heterogeneity of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) commonly leads to therapeutic failure of HCC. Cytokeratin 19 (CK19) is well acknowledged as a biliary/progenitor cell marker and a marker of tumor stem cell. CK19-positive HCCs demonstrate aggressive behaviors and poor outcomes which including worse overall survival and early tumor recurrence after hepatectomy and liver transplantation. CK19-positive HCCs are resistant to chemotherapies as well as local treatment. This subset of HCC is thought to derive from … Show more

“…5,8 Our results were concordant with those of previous studies. 9 Of the HCCs, 13.4% expressed CK19 and these were more likely to show higher tumour grade and higher AFP levels at diagnosis. However, CK19 expression was not an independent predictor of OS.…”

“…1,2 Immunohistochemical phenotypical aberrancies in HCC have been reported. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] Recently, aberrant expression of intestinal markers such as caudal type homeobox 2 (CDX2) 11,12 and cadherin 17 (CDH17) 13,14 in HCC has been increasingly recognised, albeit rather sparsely. Also, few studies have reported the expression of the novel SATB homeobox 2 (SATB2) (special AT-rich binding protein-2) in HCC, a marker that is considered to be fairly specific to the lower GI tract origin tumours.…”

“…CK19 is regarded as a progenitor marker of HCC ( 19 ). CK19-positive HCC is a characteristic subtype as it exhibits distinctive molecular profiling ( 20 ). Therefore, we assessed the consistency of CK19 expression between F0 and F1.…”

“…5,6 Compared with CK19negative HCCs, CK19-positive HCCs exhibit highly aggressive behavior, which is associated with poorer prognosis and a higher rate of recurrence. 6,7 Expression of CK19 is an important independent prognostic predictor of HCC. 8 Preoperative prediction of CK19 expression is of great significance for prognostic evaluation and formulation of treatment strategies for patients with HCCs.…”
