City checking: Piloting the UK's first community‐based drug safety testing (drug checking) service in 2 city centres

Abstract: Aims To explore the feasibility of delivering community‐based drug safety testing (drug checking), to trial service design characteristics and to compare with festival‐based testing. Methods In total, 171 substances of concern were submitted on 5 dates at 3 venues in 2 UK cities and tested using up to 6 analytical techniques. Test results and harm reduction advice were distributed directly to over 200 service users through 144 tailored healthcare consultations, to stakeholders, and through early warning system… Show more

“…shows that consumers of MDMA at music festivals and other events not only access these services, but modify their behaviours when informed that the purity of the substance they intend to consume may cause harm (53)(54)(55). Making testing facilities easily accessible to PIED consumers could be one way to address harms associated with counterfeit and contaminated product.…”

“…1 In the UK, The Loop's large teams of chemists deploy and triangulate the results of multiple analytical processes, including ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis) and gravimetric analysis to quantify 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). 3 Meanwhile, new techniques (e.g. paper spray mass spectrometry 4 ) that detect and quantify substances at threshold levels continue to evolve.…”

“…Statistics reported by support services to management are accepted at face value, recognising that service design, delivery, data collection, staffing and even the agencies themselves change, data are not standardised, and therefore year on year comparisons of services cannot necessarily be made, as noted by Measham. 2,3 In response to Scott and Scott, Ward said that 'having the Loop as part of a multiagency plan enhanced the plan with a new strand that gave the festival attendee choice and information about substances. Persons attending in 2016 made choices not to use substances.…”
