City as archive: a dialogue between theory and practice

Abstract: Richard Wentworth and Michael Sheringham engage in a discussion that explores how we can get a better grip on urban experience by looking at the city as an archive. Richard’s artistic and practice-based approach here compliments Michael’s more analytic reflections drawing on philosophy and literature.

“…In actionable terms, this may prompt suggestions and interventions to unlock silenced futures, to further 'dramatise' the future through the use of techniques of story-telling, performance or even 'dreaming' and to radically enhance 'anticipatory competences', 'styles of anticipation' and our engagement with the geographical-environment unconscious. Paraphrasing Roberts (2015), urban dwellers themselves become the curators of the giant, contingent archive that is the city.…”

“…It also evokes and records space and communicates the connection between materials and urban practice. At the same time, materials and relations are compacted layer upon layer [74], such as the octagonal building changes from the casino during the concession period to the Workers' Cultural Palace.…”
