“…[33], [34]. While not studied in as much detail as other experimental arthritis models, anti-citrullinated protein antibodies have been suggested to play a role in the severity of disease in the collagen antibody induced arthritis model of experimental arthritis [35], [36].…”

“…In collagen-induced arthritis (CIA), induction of tolerance with a citrulline-containing peptide led to a significant decrease in susceptibility to CIA, and monoclonal antibodies to citrullinated fibrinogen enhanced arthritis tissue injury when coadministered with anti–type II collagen antibodies (13). In 2 other studies, it was found that citrullinated proteins had increased immunogenicity and arthritogenicity in animal models of arthritis (14,15). In addition, ex vivo studies have shown that ACPAs can activate the complement cascade (16), and ACPA immune complexes stimulate human macrophages to produce proinflammatory cytokines (17,18), providing possible pathogenic mechanisms of ACPAs in RA.…”

“…However, it has been described that silica treatment induces apoptosis in macrophages, which in turn increase citrullination due to elevated intracellular calcium concentrations [4, 12]. An increase in citrullination may aggravate arthritis as described for the administration of citrullinated collagen [13]. On the other side, it is known that silica treatment can recruit CD4 + Foxp3+ regulatory T cells to the lungs which may counteract immune activation [14].…”
