Citizen science and the professional-amateur divide: lessons from differing online practices

Abstract: Online citizen science platforms increasingly provide types of infrastructural support previously only available to organisationally-based professional scientists. Other practices, such as creative arts, also exploit the freedom and accessibility afforded by the World Wide Web to shift the professional-amateur relationship. This paper compares communities from these two areas to show that disparate practices can learn from each other to better understand their users and their technology needs. Three major area… Show more

“…The impact of anthropic activities on environmental integrity and their deleterious consequences on human health have pushed more and more citizens, all over the world, to organize and become informed about the quality of the air they breathe; such a change in social attitudes has been greatly accelerated by the internet's diffusion [1,2]. Solid matter suspended in air, known as particulate matter (PM), is an air pollutant that has sparked the greatest concern among citizens because of its negative effects on health [3][4][5].…”

“…On Avimap, there is a clear hierarchy where the researchers at Sovon design and manage the portal and the users of Avimap collect the data, in line with Shirk et al's [2012] contributory model. Even though BMP was initiated by volunteers and even though some volunteers still have some coordinating roles, 5 there is thus a clear professional-amateur divide on the portal [Dowthwaite and Sprinks, 2019].…”

“…One feature of network organizations is citizen science, a concept that allows professional scientists to provide and receive information from an amateur public as voluntary participants in research (Dowthwaite & Sprinks, 2019). This concept is strongly supported by the emergence of internet technology that is able to bring together scientists and amateurs.…”

“…One contribution that can be made by the amateur public is the provision of large quantities of data through the internet (Bonney et al, 2009). The results of this joint project can be published in a variety of activities, presentations in schools, or even presenting them in science club (Dowthwaite & Sprinks, 2019). In this case, the government must create a platform where people can interact with each other.…”
