This study examines the correlations between urban environmental satisfaction, neighborhood relations, and livability. Previous studies on livability have insufficiently dealt with urban environments and neighborhood relations and have failed to conduct an integrated analysis that considers the causal relationships between these factors. To fill these knowledge gaps, this study includes urban environmental satisfaction and neighborhood relations as factors affecting livability. Moreover, this study verified the mediating effect of neighborhood relations between urban environmental satisfaction and livability. Online surveys were carried out with 750 residents in Seoul, South Korea, and the structural equation model (SEM) was employed. The results indicated that a higher level of urban environmental satisfaction affected livability positively. In particular, the accessibility had the greatest effect on livability. In addition, neighborhood relations had a mediating effect on the pleasantness and safety of urban environments. Today, many developing countries are undergoing rapid urbanization, as Seoul has experienced in the past. However, this can cause a number of simultaneous side effects, which lower livability. Furthermore, this leads to population decline which might hinder urban sustainability. Therefore, this study suggests important policy implications for achieving urban sustainability by improving livability.

This study examined the relationship between physical environment satisfaction, neighborhood satisfaction, and quality of life (QoL) in Gyeonggi, Korea. As previous QoL studies have rarely dealt with residential environments or examined the interactions between the physical and social factors in residential environments, to close these knowledge gaps, this study took physical and social environment satisfaction factors as relevant influences on QoL. This study also verified the moderating effect of neighborhood satisfaction on QoL through physical environment satisfaction. This study analyzed a Quality of Life Survey that was conducted in Gyeonggi, Korea. The total number of samples in the survey was 20,000, covering all 31 districts in Gyeonggi Province. In addition, multistage stratified sampling based on the number of household members and housing types was applied to the sample design. This increases the representation of the data. As a result, it was found that higher satisfaction with the physical and neighborhood factors positively affected QoL, with satisfaction with the facilities having the most obvious effect. Neighborhood satisfaction was found to have a moderating effect between safety satisfaction and QoL. Many developing countries have tended to pursue quantitative growth with a focus on economic aspects, which has undermined overall urban sustainability. However, recent urban management has also emphasized qualitative growth, such as resident QoL, as being just as important for urban sustainability. Therefore, this study’s results have important policy implications for qualitative urban growth.

El hábitat humano está conformado por el entorno social —relaciones personales— y el entorno físico —bienes en el espacio público—. Si los bienes son inoportunos y escasos se generan conflictos deteriorando las relaciones personales. Este estudio evaluó el desarrollo de conflictos con respecto a la edad, el nivel educativo, la estratificación socioeconómica y las condiciones del espacio. La investigación se realizó entre 2017 y 2018 en Palmira, Colombia, donde hay una oferta limitada de bienes públicos y un asentamiento poblacional educativo, generacional y socioeconómicamente diverso. Se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas a 150 personas con edades entre los 10 y 80 años, distribuidos en 5 parques. Se hicieron preguntas, de orden demográfico, sobre la experiencia de uso de bienes y las situaciones de conflicto. Aunque todos los niveles socioeconómicos mostraron conflictos, en el nivel 1 fueron especialmente altos. En los parques ubicados cerca al centro de la ciudad se concentró la mayor cantidad de conflictos, mientras que en las zonas residenciales fueron registrados menos conflictivos. Por tanto, se diseñan propuestas de bienes públicos móviles y resistentes al deterioro que permitan flexibilizar el espacio para responder a las actividades y necesidades de la población. Se propone la reestructuración de los 5 parques urbanos para motivar el encuentro, amortiguar el tránsito entre actividades y fortalecer el tejido social mediante el manejo de cuerpos vegetales, zonas de asentamiento y caminos interconectados. Se concluye que el arraigo con el espacio y el encuentro entre personas resultan cruciales para disminuir los conflictos y construir el tejido social.
