CiteOpinion: Evidence-based Evaluation Tool for Academic Contributions of Research Papers Based on Citing Sentences

Abstract: Purpose To uncover the evaluation information on the academic contribution of research papers cited by peers based on the content cited by citing papers, and to provide an evidence-based tool for evaluating the academic value of cited papers. Design/methodology/approach CiteOpinion uses a deep learning model to automatically extract citing sentences from representative citing papers; it starts with an analysis on the citing sentences, then it identifies major academic contribution points of the cited paper, p… Show more

“…Figure 12 shows the attribute similarity distribution map and corresponding parallel coordinates drawn from the somatization symptoms of SCL-90. The three symptoms with high correlation also belong to the same questionnaire SCL-90, and the three symptoms with the lowest correlation belong to the distribution of similarity of different attributes of UPI [ 19 ]. According to users, in multisource questionnaires, such as UPI and SCL-90, different symptoms of the same questionnaire had a strong correlation, but different symptoms of different questionnaires had strong correlation, and the correlation was weak; different questionnaires have a high correlation with the design of the same symptom; in UPI and SCL-90, somatic symptoms had the lowest correlation with other symptoms; the results of the correlation analysis of the multisource questionnaire are similar to the actual situation.…”

“…Citation theorists have long wanted to understand the various functions and meanings of specific citations but have been limited in their studies by small, manually gathered samples. Having the context of a citance in the surrounding text has opened the door to systematic analysis of the content and sentiment of individual cited references [Le, Chug, Deng, Jiao, et al, 2019]. Plainly, not all citations carry the same weight but neither does the variety of citation types invalidate the Mertonian view of citing as, in the majority, acknowledgement from one scholar to another of an intellectual debt (studies to date reveal that most citations are neutral or positive in tone, and few are explicitly negative).…”
