The nature and extent of errors made by Science Citation Index ExpandedTM (SCIE) and SciFinder® ScholarTM (SFS) during data entry have been characterized by analysis of more than 5,400 cited articles from 204 randomly selected cited-article lists published in three core chemistry journals. Failure to map cited articles to target-source articles was due to transcription errors, target-source article errors, omitted cited articles, and reason unknown. Mapping error rates ranged from 1.2 to 6.9 percent. SCIE and SFS also were found to correct errors made by authors in cited-article lists roughly one-half and one-sixth of the time, respectively.

V minulosti byly odhaleny případy autorů, kteří v soupisu literatury uvedli publikace, aniž by je četli, nebo bez jakékoliv kontroly převzali již chybně vytvořené bibliografické citace z jiného článku (2)(3)(4)(5). V důsledku toho pak utrpí nejen pověst těchto autorů, ale i samotných časopisů kvůli publikování pochybně vzniklých článků s chybami (6).…”

V důsledku opakujících se chyb v bibliografických citacích je mezi vědci zájem o citační manažery. V současnosti je jen málo studií zabývající se evaluací kvality bibliografických citací vygenerovaných těmito aplikacemi. V tomto výzkumu byly srovnávány bibliografické citace online a tištěných článků, knih, příspěvků ve sborníku a příspěvku na webové stránce vygenerované z citačních manažerů Citace PRO, EndNote, Mendeley, RefWorks a Zotero s ručně vytvořenými citacemi podle citačních stylů ACS, APA, ASA, ČSN ISO 690, JAMA, MLA a NLM. Při srovnání bylo zjištěno, že žádný z citačních manažerů nevygeneruje všechny citace správně. Nejlepší výsledky byly zjištěny u programů Mendeley, který měl celkový nejmenší počet chyb a nejmenší počet chyb pro 3 citační styly, a Zotero, který měl druhý celkový nejmenší počet chyb a nejmenší počet chyb pro 4 citační styly. Naopak u Citace PRO bylo zjištěno nejvíce chyb pro 5 citačních stylů, u EndNote a RefWorks pro 2 citační styly. Všechny citační manažery měly problémy s generováním různých údajů v bibliografických citacích, přičemž však některé chyby byly způsobeny technickými omezeními citačních manažerů a některé vznikly v důsledku chybného nastavení citačních šablon. Vzhledem k obdobným funkcím testovaných citačních manažerů a počtu chyb ve vygenerovaných citacích se jako nejvhodnějšími manažery ukázaly Zotero a Mendeley.

PurposeThis paper aims to determine the percentage of reference errors and type of errors in four library and information science (LIS) journals.Design/methodology/approachResearch articles from issues published in 2007 were selected for analysis. The references were compared to online freely available tables of contents. The errors identified were categorised into six elements: journal title; author(s); article title; publication year; volume; and page numbers.FindingsThe highest percentage of reference errors was 49.1 percent (Information and Management). The overall error rates were: author (56 percent), page number (22 percent), article title (15 percent), volume (3 percent), publication year (2 percent) and journal title (2 percent).Research limitations/implicationsThe tables of contents (ToCs) used to compare the article references may not have correctly recorded the article details. Not all journal references could be reviewed as not all journal ToCs are available online. This one year, 2007, may not accurately reflect the citation accuracy of the journal in other years. This study did not differentiate between errors that would prevent the location of the article and those that could still be located with perseverance.Practical implicationsError rates in these LIS journals are considerable. The current method of authors being responsible for the references is not resulting in accurate bibliographic information.Originality/valueBased on the findings, possible solutions are suggested that could improve the accuracy of references.
