“…One remarkable aspect of the Altmetric is its immediacy when compared to the classic citations cycle. In most of the studies about the top‐cited articles in dentistry, it is clear how it takes at least a decade to become a citation classic and how older articles are usually cited more frequently, independently of their current impact, while the impact of more recently published papers is usually underestimated maybe because of the short time passed since their publication, as it is too short for citations to be accumulated (Feijoo, Limeres, Fernández‐Varela, Ramos, & Diz, ; Garcovich, Marques Martinez, & Adobes Martin, ). In the case of Altmetric, the behaviour is totally different than in the classic citation system, making it possible for recently published items to acquire a significant recognition and visibility in the short term.…”

“…7 Most of these studies do not set a time limit, but citations are strongly time-dependent and older articles are usually more frequently cited, independently of their current impact, while the impact of more recently published papers is usually underestimated due to the short time after their publication. 8 The aim of our investigation is to perform a bibliometric analysis with a longitudinal set-up that embraces the last three decades. This type of set-up, to our best knowledge, has never been used before in orthodontic literature and can result in a reliable assessment of the evolution of the scientific production in orthodontics over time, reducing the bias related to the time passed since publication.…”

“…It is indeed surprising how these high-quality articles are rarely used for evidence-based policy making as highlighted in the Altmetric data break-down. On the contrary, many studies performed only on citations count report that the most cited items are expert opinions and case-series with a low level of evidence [5]. Altmetric is not intended to be a measure of scientific evidence, and this correlation can be due to its immediacy.…”

“…Altmetric is not intended to be a measure of scientific evidence, and this correlation can be due to its immediacy. Altmetric is able to highlight newly released research items, among which, systematic reviews and RCT have a higher frequency than among the most cited items which are usually at least one or two decades old [5,28].…”
