Citation Block Determination Using Textual Coherence

Abstract: Detecting the boundaries of citations in the running text of research papers is an important task for research paper summarisation, idea attribution, sentiment analysis, and other citation-based analysis research. Recently, detecting non-explicit citing sentences has garnered some attention, but can still be seen as in its infancy. We define this task as citation block determination (CBD). In this paper we propose and investigate the effects of various types of textual coherence on CBD, positing that it is a c… Show more

“…Earlier work on span determination is mostly concerned with scientific texts [O'C82, KTT16], operates at sentence level and exploits explicit authoring cues specific to scientific text. Although Wikipedia has well formed text, it does not follow explicit scientific guidelines for placing citations.…”

“…More recent research such as [34] looks at the fragment level with a system that extracts fragments from the cited document which are related to the citing fragment. The authors in [16] are detecting the boundaries of citations in the full text of research papers, to improve paper summarisation. In this research, the aim is to help scientists to search documents with citation as a criteria.…”
