Circumcision Status is Not Associated with Condom Use and Prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Infections Among Young Black MSM

Abstract: This study investigated whether intact young Black MSM differed from their circumcised counterparts regarding condom use behaviors and perceptions and HIV/Chlamydia/gonorrhea. Young Black MSM completed a self-interview, including a pictorial item assessing circumcision status and measures of condom use. Twenty-seven percent of 388 participants reported not being circumcised. With one exception, no associations tested approached significance. The mean frequency of unprotected insertive anal sex for circumcised … Show more

“…111 An investigation involving Afro-American MSM failed to find any difference between those who were circumcised and the uncircumcised in experiencing problems with use of condoms or extent of perceiving condoms as detracting from sexual pleasure. 112 A 2018 small 10-item "penile anatomy and circumcision quiz" by Earp et al of 999 US men circumcised as infants found that most of these circumcised men were satisfied with having been circumcised. 113 But instead of accepting the findings as had been reported by the men, Earp et al suggested that the men had adopted "false beliefs" to "'justify' their genitally altered state."…”

“…Crosby & Charnigo specifically provided data relevant to sensation (see their Table 1), and although scores for adverse perceptions were actually higher for uncircumcised men, there was no statistical difference. A subsequent study, of Afro-American MSM, found no difference between men of either MC status in problems with condom use or perception that condoms detracted from sexual pleasure [156]. We therefore strongly dispute the use by H&C of the findings by Crosby and Charnigo as support for their contention that circumcised men avoid condoms because of sensation issues.…”
