Circulation of Dirofilaria repens and Dirofilaria immitis in Moldova

Abstract: BackgroundOver the last two decades, a significant spread of dirofilariasis has been observed in eastern and central Europe. However, data on the circulation of Dirofilaria spp. in Moldova were absent although direct neighbor states reported high incidence rates of human dirofilariasis.MethodsDaily mean temperature data were used to calculate Dirofilaria spp. development units, which were used to estimate the potential for complete extrinsic development in the mosquitoes (= sum of potential Dirofilaria spp. tr… Show more

“…This observation supports the assumption that a broad spectrum of mosquito taxa is potentially involved in the transmission cycles of Dirofilaria spp. in Europe with more than 20 species found infected so far [ 7 , 18 , 26 , 33 48 ].…”

“…All mosquito species positive for Dirofilaria spp. DNA in the DDBR were classified as suspected vectors in at least one European xenomonitoring study [ 7 , 26 , 33 48 ], including Ae. vexans determined as potential vector in Romania before [ 18 ].…”

“…Together with the recent detection of canine parasitic nematodes Dirofilaria repens in pools of Ur. unguiculata from Moldova [ 101 ], this strongly suggests much broader host range for this mosquito species and its possible relevance to the circulation of zoonotic pathogens in Europe.…”

The range of conclusions drawn from molecular xenomonitoring depends on the ability to adequately sample the vector population, accurately determine the infection status in the vector, and link infections in the vector population to infections in the human or animal populations.…”
