In the summer of 2020, tropical cyclone (TC) activities experienced a contrastive transition over the western North Pacific (WNP), from silence in July to unusually active in August. Furthermore, the generation location of TCs was further northwestward in August 2020, resulting in more typhoons landing, and three TCs successively moving northward, which is rare in history. Based on diagnoses with the total genesis potential index (GPI) in July and August 2020, it is suggested that the variation of mid-tropospheric relative humidity and upward convective motion is the major factor for the transition of TC genesis in summer 2020, while the changes of SST, low-level vorticity, and vertical wind shear anomalies played a secondary role. The exceptional variation of the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) activity from July to August 2020 contributed to the transition of the environmental conditions over WNP. In July 2020, MJO was restricted in the Indian Ocean, thus generating an anomalous low-level anticyclone over WNP that intensified the WNP subtropical high. While in early August, MJO propagated eastward to enhance convective activities over the South China Sea and the Philippine Sea, favorable to TC genesis. Thus, MJO activity is a potential predictability source for intraseasonal variation of TC genesis anomalies in WNP.

Long-lasting inactive and active multiple tropical cyclone (MTC) events in the western North Pacific (WNP) during July-August 1982-2020 were investigated. It is found that the significant difference between the inactive and active events lies on large-scale circulation conditions and tropical SST anomalies in the Pacific and Indian Ocean. A negative phase of the Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM), an Indian ocean warming and a local suppressed convective phase are associated with the long-lasting inactive MTC events, and vise visa. A further diagnosis of the environmental parameters showed that dynamic parameters such as mid-level vertical motion and the upper-level divergence and thermodynamic parameters such as vertically integrated water vapor content and low-level specific humidity play important roles in regulating the inactive and active MTC events. A separation of interannual and intraseasonal components indicates that the extreme MTC events are influenced by both the timescale motions. While the former is primarily through the SSTA-induced low-level anticyclonic and descent anomalies, the latter is via the fluctuation of the boreal summer atmospheric intraseasonal oscillation.

While intraseasonal oscillation was in the inactive phase over the western North Pacific (WNP) during August of 1996 and 2014, no tropical cyclone (TC) genesis occurred in August of 2014, whereas 9 TCs (average 5.7 TCs) formed in August of 1996 with 5 TCs in the northeastern part (the largest number since 1979) and 4 TCs in the southwestern part. The present analysis reveals an obvious southwest-northeast-oriented lower-level wave train over the WNP associated with anomalous convection around the Maritime Continent in August 1996. This wave train induced anomalous cyclone and enhanced convection over the northeastern WNP, which provided a favorable background for TC genesis. Over the southwestern WNP, although monthly mean anomalies were unfavorable, the intraseasonal variation contributed to positive vorticity anomalies at the time and location of TC genesis. In contrast, both monthly anomalies and daily variations of environment factors were hostile to TC genesis during August 2014.
