Circulating tumour cells in head and neck cancers: Biological insights

Abstract: Tumour metastasis is one of the leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Circulating tumour cells (CTCs) have been implicated in loco-regional and distant metastasis and its role is being extensively studied in various malignancies, including those from the head and neck region. The main challenge in understanding their significance lies in the rarity of these cells in the blood. However, newer technologies have attempted to overcome these pitfalls. This review explores the evolution of CTC research and othe… Show more

“…In HNSCC, investigation of CTCs and ctDNA in different disease or treatment status has been considered as a predictive marker for diagnosis, prognosis and response to treatment [ 55 , 109 , 110 , 114 , 117 , 118 , 119 ]. Additionally, positive CTCs after major treatment are associated with an increased risk of distal metastasis in patients with localized HNSCC [ 120 , 121 ].…”
