Circulating Monocyte Count as a Surrogate Marker for Ventricular-Arterial Remodeling and Incident Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction

Abstract: Among 2085 asymptomatic subjects (age: 51.0 ± 10.7 years, 41.3% female) with data available on common carotid artery diameter (CCAD) and circulating total white blood cell (WBC) counts, higher circulating leukocytes positively correlated with higher high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). Higher WBC/segmented cells and monocyte counts were independently associated with greater relative wall thicknesses and larger CCADs, which in general were more pronounced in men and obese subjects (body mass index ≥ 25… Show more

“…It was determined from our investigation that the origin country of study had a widespread reach, being conducted in over 24 separate countries (Figure 2). The most prevalent country was the USA ( n = 9) where the most numerous studies were conducted 21–29 . The countries following this were Denmark, 30–32 and Italy 33–35 ( n = 3); China, 36,37 Europe, 38,39 France, 40,41 Spain, 42,43 and Taiwan 44,45 ( n = 2).…”

“…25 Higher peak monocyte levels are associated with larger left ventricular end-diastolic volumes, lower left ventricular ejection fractions, and worse clinical outcomes. [26][27][28] Additionally, a peak monocyte count >900 can independently predict HF, left ventricular aneurysm formation, and cardiac events. 29 Therefore, eosinophils and monocytes have opposite effects on HF; ie, higher eosinophil numbers and lower monocyte numbers both correlate with better patient prognoses.…”

“…Waist-to-height ratio has been tested as a surrogate for abdominal obesity in adults and children and seems to be a better predictor of cardiometabolic risk than BMI [56,57]. High sensitivity CRP is a biomarker that quantifies low grade systemic inflammation, in the absence of overt systemic inflammatory or immunologic disorders and has been used as a predictor of cardiovascular events [58], but has been also associated with diastolic dysfunction and heart failure in adults [59][60][61]. In the study of Dahiya et al in obese adolescents, CRP was an independent determinant of LV diastolic function [21].…”
