Circulating miRNA in Atherosclerosis: A Clinical Biomarker and Early Diagnostic Tool

Abstract: : Atherosclerosis, which is a vascular disease, is characterized by narrowing the arteries and forming plaque inside arteries. There is a record 17.5 million associated deaths recorded annually, representing 31% of global death. It has been noted that there is an association between vascular fibrosis and atherosclerosis. The thickening of the arterial wall and reduction of the lumen diameter may cause unwarranted deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM), and these conditions help in the progression of many cli… Show more

“…Moreover, given the links between dyslipidemia, inflammation, and atherosclerosis, several miRNAs (i.e., miR-27a/b, miR-146a, miR-125a-5p, miR-155, miR-301b, miR-302a) have demonstrated their role in lipid metabolism. They seem to be involved in the absorption, esterification, and efflux of cholesterol, as well as in the process of foam cell development, reducing their number [ 111 , 112 , 113 ].…”

“…Concerning miR-29b, it was detected in human serum and differentially expressed in the blood of patients with neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), in which it constitutes a potential biomarker for AD treatment [ 104 ]. Furthermore, circulating miR-29b was reported to increase with aging, which often constitutes a comorbidity in breast cancer, and seems to be correlated with early atherosclerosis [ 105 ], muscle atrophy [ 106 ], changes in cortical metabolism [ 107 ], and osteoporosis [ 108 ].…”

“…Studies indicate that many pathophysiological procedures for different diseases, such as cancer, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, and CHD, consist of various cellular pathways. [ 8 , 9 ] One of the vital mechanisms is miRNA regulation. [ 10 , 11 ] Studies show that miR-146a is involved in the process of CHD.…”
