Circulating microRNAs are associated with Pulmonary Hypertension and Development of Chronic Lung Disease in Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia

Abstract: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) contributes to high mortality in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). A better understanding of the regulatory mechanisms underlying the pathology in CDH might allow the identification of prognostic biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets. We report the results from an expression profiling of circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) in direct post-pulmonary blood flow of 18 CDH newborns. Seven miRNAs differentially expressed in children that either died or developed chronic lung diseas… Show more

“…miR-1307 was originally discovered as a novel human miRNA upregulated in Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive nasopharyngeal carcinomas ( 54 ) and was also suggested to be associated with the progression of prostate cancer ( 55 ). miR-1307 expression has been shown to be dysregulated in newborns with chronic lung disease ( 56 ). Importantly, the study by Bavagnoli et al demonstrated a functional role of miR-1307 in the regulation of viral replication in the influenza A virus H1N1, which was the pathogen responsible for the 2009 H1N1 pandemic ( 40 ).…”

“…miR-155-5p, miR-186-5p, miR-16-5p, miR-27b-3p) and pneumonia (i.e. miR-29a-3p and miR-30a-5p) were also found highly prevalent in COVID-19 [ 86 , 138–140 ].…”
