Circulating MicroRNA-21 Is a Potential Diagnostic Biomarker in Gastric Cancer

Abstract: MicroRNA-21 was upexpressed in gastric cancer (GC) indicating that it is a potential diagnostic biomarker for GC. In this study, 50 GC patients and 50 healthy controls were recruited. miR-21 levels in serum and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were quantified using quantitative real-time PCR. CA199, and CEA were measured using electrochemiluminescence assay. The sensitivity and specificity of circulating miR-21, CA199 and CEA in GC diagnosis, the correlation of circulating miR-21 to clinicopathologic… Show more

“…It is thus not surprising that a significant number of miRNAs listed in this review have been also identified in the blood of patients suffering from unrelated pathologies (e.g. ; the circulating level of miR-21 is altered both in patients suffering from various cancers [6264] and from obesity and/or T2DM [26,27,30,39]). As shown on Supplementary Table 6, 112 KEGG pathways were predicted to be collectively targeted by the 119 miRNAs commonly identified in the human blood [61].…”

“…Still, future validation is needed for the above studies in order to demonstrate that AMOs can function as therapeutic agents against gastric cancer, it is thus important to have future functional studies on miR-21 and its regulatory elements/regulators in relation to gastric carcinomas. Recently, identification of circulating microRNAs in gastric cancer progression and treatment is an important approach in gastric cancer research [3,29]. Circulating miR-21 expression is also very important marker for prognostic tool for gastric carcinoma and miR-21 could be a prognostic biomarker for patients.…”

“…Cancer antigen 199 (CA199) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) are two old common tumour diagnostic markers; however, their specificity and sensitivity are too low for gastric cancer diagnosis. Therefore, a good biomarker of screening for gastric cancer is urgently needed [3]. Currently, the prognosis of advanced gastric cancer remains poor since safe and effective adjuvant therapy options are limited.…”

“…Nanobiosensor development is particularly relevant for such miRNAs, whose aberrant expression has been shown to correlate with the pathogenesis and progression of several diseases including cancer [6,7]. , in particular, is largely studied since is overexpressed in a variety of solid [8,9] and hematological tumors [10,11]. For these reasons, miR-21 was selected as a microRNA prototype in this study.…”
