Circulating levels of colony-stimulating factor 1 as a prognostic indicator in 82 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer

Abstract: Summary Serum samples from 82 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer, previously assayed for CA125, were assayed for circulating colony-stimulating factor 1 (CSF-1). An elevated CSF-1 concentration (>450 U ml-' or >5.42 ng ml-') was significantly associated with a worse survival (P = 0.02). The predictive value of raised CSF-1 levels was retained whether the first available sample for all patients (n = 82) or the first sample at the start of chemotherapy (n = 41) was considered. Mean CSF-1 levels (n = 14) dro… Show more

“…No significant changes in serum M-CSF levels were observed in ovarian tumor tissue samples collected both prior to and at the end of surgery (Scholl et al 1994). On the other hand, significant decreases in M-CSF levels were observed in serial determinations during chemotherapy.…”

“…Even though no definite correlation between M-CSF and CA 125 has been found by several authors (Xu et al 1991, Scholl et al 1994Suzuki et al 1993Suzuki et al , 1995, it seems that the combined determination of these two markers can lead to an improvement in overall sensitivity, especially in stage I ovarian cancer patients (Suzuki et al 1993).…”

“…70 It has been also suggested that M-CSF released by murine sarcoma cells may mediate the induction of macrophage-derived tumor growth factors. 71 Enhanced serum levels of M-CSF in patients with ovarian carcinoma 72 and non-small cell lung carcinoma 20 were found to correlate with patients poor prognosis. Our results suggest that M-CSF serum assays are of rather limited value in predicting soft tissue sarcoma patients outcomes.…”

“…Despite extensive research, the mortality does not seem to be decreasing (Bourne et al, 1993). However, even in patients presenting with early disease, an extensive surgical treatment does not guarantee cure (Scholl et al, 1994). Therefore, new variables correlating with the malignant potential of the cancer cells would be clinically valuable in adjuvant therapy for individual patients in early stage ovarian cancer.…”
