Circulating Interferon-Gamma Levels Are Associated with Low Body Weight in Newly Diagnosed Kenyan Non-Substance Using Tuberculosis Individuals

Abstract: Although interferon-gamma, interleukin-10, and adiponectin are key immunopathogenesis mediators of tuberculosis, their association with clinical manifestations of early stage disease is inconclusive. We determined interferon-gamma, interleukin-10, and adiponectin levels in clinically and phenotypically well-characterised non-substance using new pulmonary tuberculosis patients (n = 13) and controls (n = 14) from Kenya. Interferon-gamma levels (P < 0.0001) and interferon-gamma to interleukin-10 (P < 0.001) and i… Show more

“…The fact that serum IFN-γ levels are up-regulated in the newly diagnosed TB patients indicates innate protective response during early phase of M. tuberculosis infection. The results of the current study agree with previous studies (19)(20)(21)(22)(23).These findings could be referred to possibility of developing immune-prognostic assays based on new biomarkers detection.…”

“…The available evidence regarding the association of BMI with the levels of inflammation in TB is unclear. Studies show that increased BMI is associated with increased ( 42 ), decreased ( 43 ) or unchanged ( 44 ) serum levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Though serum cholesterol and TG levels showed a direct relationship with BMI, beyond certain inflection points in BMI, the slope in the association with lipid levels decreased to a plateau.…”

“…STAT1 plays a role in a signaling pathway to control intracellular killing of phagocytosed Mycobacterium tuberculosis [ 50 ]. IL-10 is a key factor that mediates the immunopathogenesis of tuberculosis in combination with interferon gamma and adiponectin [ 51 ].…”
