Circulating inflammatory cells in patients with metastatic breast cancer: Implications for treatment

Abstract: Adaptive and innate immune cells play a crucial role as regulators of cancer development.Inflammatory cells in blood flow seem to be involved in pro-tumor activities and contribute to breast cancer progression. Circulating lymphocyte ratios such as the platelet-lymphocytes ratio (PLR), the monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) and the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are new reproducible, routinely feasible and cheap biomarkers of immune response. These indexes have been correlated to prognosis in many solid tumors… Show more

“…Inflammation indexes, including SII, SIRI, NLR, MLR, and PLR, were shown as possible predictive and prognostic markers in many types of malignancies, autoimmune disorders, COVID‐19, and diabetes mellitus 10‐14 . SII and SIRI are new markers that could reflect the inflammatory response.…”

“…Inflammation indexes, including SII, SIRI, NLR, MLR, and PLR, were shown as possible predictive and prognostic markers in many types of malignancies, autoimmune disorders, COVID-19, and diabetes mellitus. [10][11][12][13][14] SII and SIRI are new markers that could reflect the inflammatory response. SII and SIRI were first investigated in cancers, and increased levels of these indexes were related to bad outcomes.…”

“…In breast cancer patients, MDSCs are enriched in peripheral circulation, which predicts advanced clinical stage, worse survival, and metastatic extension ( 24 ). Moreover, MDSCs participate in the self-seeding of circulating tumor cells leading to the local recurrence in breast cancer patients who received surgery and radiotherapy ( 25 ), and MDSCs contribute to the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment and hinder the therapeutic efficacy.…”

“…The use of programmed PD-L1 and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) as predictive and prognostic biomarkers is well-recognized and associated with response to immunotherapy, although the latter biomarker is related to pathological specimens often found in the primary tumor site [170,171]. Several biomarkers of immunological state such as circulating tumor cells, circulating immunity cells and inflammatory indexes have been investigated as predictive and prognostic biomarkers [172][173][174][175].…”
