Circulating HOTAIR LncRNA Is Potentially Up-regulated in Coronary Artery Disease

Abstract: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the leading causes of death and disability all around the world. Recent studies have revealed that aberrantly regulated long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) as one of the main classes of cellular transcript plays a key regulatory role in transcriptional and epigenetic pathways. Recent reports have demonstrated that circulating lncRNAs in the blood can be potential biomarkers for CAD. HOTAIR is one of the most cited lncRNAs with a critical role in the initi… Show more

“…Long non-coding RNA Hox transcript antisense intergenic RNA (HOTAIR) was much lower in ECs and peripheral blood lymphocytes from atherosclerotic plaques in CAD patients (115). HOTAIR protected ECs against ox-LDL-induced apoptosis (115,116).…”

HOTAIR protected ECs against ox-LDL-induced apoptosis (115,116). In addition, HOTAIR was also significantly increased in ox-LDL-treated RAW264.7 cells and could reduce lipid accumulation and inhibit the inflammatory response by suppressing FXR1 via the NF-κB pathway (117).…”

“…These results place KCNQ1OT1, HIF1A-AS2, and APO1 at the top of potential CAD biomarkers to be used in the clinics [55]. Another study revealed HOTAIR, an lncRNA reported to be involved in vascular inflammation and age-associated-CVDs, as being upregulated in both plasma and PBMCs samples of CAD patients when compared with non-CAD patients [56]. Assessment of lncRNA expression profiles in plasma samples of both groups detected several differentially expressed lncRNAs, including lncRNAs GAS5 [57].…”

“…Some research indicates that HOTAIR could be a potential biomarker for atherosclerosis. Pang et al [118] found that HOTAIR expression was downregulated in lymphocytes derived from atherosclerosis patients, while Avazpour et al [119] demonstrated the opposite result: elevated HOTAIR expression in PBMCs from patients suffering from severe coronary artery stenosis.…”
