“…Our previous study suggested that the number of circulating EPCs was significantly reduced in patients with coronary artery disease compared with control subjects. 16 In this study, we showed that the number of circulating EPCs was lower in patients with cerebrovascular disease 24 hours after acute stroke than in control subjects. Our findings are consistent with previous reports and further support the idea that the number of EPCs is usually decreased in patients with cerebrovascular disease.…”

“…So far, the investigation of EPC number in relation to hsCRP or hypertension led to heterogeneous results. [14][15][16][18][19][20] However, for determination of extremely rare eventsFas is the case in EPC analysisFa very high number of PBMCs must be analyzed to obtain reliable results. As an aside, we had the possibility to evaluate about 30-50 times more events in this study compared with most of the previous reports.…”

“…Vasa et al reported that the circulating EPCs levels were significantly reduced in patients with CAD compared to those without CAD (Vasa et al, 2001). Wang and coworkers indicated that decreased number and activity of EPCs were observed in patients with stable CAD, and EPC levels were negatively correlated with the severity of coronary stenosis assessed by Gensini score (Wang et al, 2007). Fadini et al also reported that EPCs were significantly reduced in subjects with increased intimamedia thickness (Fadini et al, 2006), implying that depletion of EPCs may be an independent predictor of subclinical atherosclerosis.…”
