Circulating cytokines in Norwegian patients with psoriatic arthritis determined by a multiplex cytokine array system

Abstract: Our findings suggest that these factors modulate PsA pathology and the articular involvement in a synergistic manner. Identifying factors could be used in the development of clinical diagnostic tests, which are valuable to guide evidence-based diagnosis and disease management of PsA.

“…Abundant levels of MIP-1α have been found in patients with RA 9 ; however, reported levels of MIP-1α have not been higher in AS, but have been higher in PsA 6,10 . In our study, levels of MIP-1α were higher in AS and in RA.…”

“…In our study, MCP-1 levels in RA and AS patients were similar to levels in controls, suggesting that MCP-1 may not play a significant role in the pathogenesis of these diseases. The reported MCP-1 levels have not been higher in AS, psoriatic arthritis (PsA), or reactive arthritis [6][7][8] .…”

“…In order to assess whether a shift in the cytokine homeostasis exists in autoimmune conditions, fueling the predominance of pro-inflammatory cells vs. immunoregulatory T-cells, we have measured a broad spectrum of circulating cytokines in patients with various systemic autoimmune and rheumatic diseases [36][37][38][39][40][41]. The clinical picture and immunocompetent-cell distribution of pSS Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is a chronic, slowly progressive, systemic autoimmune disease that predominantly affecting middle-aged women, although it can be seen in people of all ages, including children [42].…”

“…5 Data suggest that IL-12 and IL-23 have an important role in the pathogenesis of PsA and other arthritides. 45,46 A multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebocontrolled phase II trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of ustekinumab for PsA was recently published. 47 Although detailed description of this trial goes beyond the scope of this review, is crucial to highlight the overall study design and results.…”
