Circularly polarized 2450‐MHz waveguide system for chronic exposure of small animals to microwaves

Abstract: A system developed to expose chronically a large number of small animals to 918-MHz microwave has been modified to permit exposure at 2450 MHz. Special transmitting and termination transducers were used to retrofit the exposure chambers of the 918-MHz system. The use of separate cells that consist of cylindrical waveguides, which are excited by circularly polarized, guided waves, provides a relatively constant and easily quantifiable coupling of microwave energy to each animal, regardless of their position, po… Show more

“…The fields in an exposed animal are strongly dependent on animal size and orientation [Guy et al, 1979;Chou et al, 1985] so that movement, especially movement of the head, would have changed the fields in the head during exposure. Although, as reflected in the fractions in Table 2, medium sized spiny neurons were not all affected to the same degree by treatment.…”

“…The most extensive investigations of PW effects have been a product of the circular waveguide exposure system developed by Guy et al [1979]. Many reports by Lai [e.g., Lai et al, 1984a,b] have described complex interactions between 2450 MHz PW exposure of rats and drugs that influence the T co .…”

“…Further details on the exposure system, as well as dosimetric evaluations, have been described by Guy and Chou (1976) for the 915-MHz system and by Guy and McDougall (1979) for the 2450-MHz system.…”
