The circular economy deviates from the classical, economic, traditional, linear model, based on large amounts of materials and energy, easily accessibles Circular economy concept has become increasingly popular, gaining popularity among both researchers and practitioners. The transition to a circular economy is an opportunity to change the current economy and make it more sustainable, helping to achieve environmental and climate goals and principles and protecting existing resources. The aim of the paper is to highlight the importance of the concept of sustainability and circularity in the food market as well as to highlight the connection with other topics. To achieve this goal, a review of the literature was performed by querying Web of Science databases, while performing a bibliometric analysis. The results show a major interest for the sustainability and circularity concepts in the food market, due to the exponential growth of items in recent times. By searching the Web of Science database, 1793 scientific documents were found by the keyword “food sustainability”, 6354 documents containing the keyword “circularity” and over 33.3 thousand documents on the topic of “sustainability”. These keywords were found at least in the title, abstract, or keywords of the document.

Over the last decade, the circular economy (CE) has attracted attention due to the current unsustainable model of production and consumption, which involves an increased resource use and depletion. Agri-food is one of the key sectors where action must be taken to ensure the transition to a more sustainable development model in line with circular economy principles. This study aims to evaluate the potential of implementing the circular economy in the pitahaya agri-food chain in Ecuador. The research was conducted from 2019 to 2021, during which a checklist was applied that included 91 items grouped into nine dimensions: source or supply of materials, design, manufacturing, economic circle, distribution and sales, consumption/use, 4R, remanufacturing, and sustainability. The level of the circular economy evaluated in the study was low (2.14 points out of 5). Therefore, improvements are required in the agri-food management of fruit cultivation and processing. Critical points were identified and strategies were proposed to increase competitiveness, improve environmental performance, and promote the implementation of the circular economy in this production chain. A final recommendation is to explore research on the concept of CE in the sector, mainly focused on the valorization of biomass as a contribution to the bioeconomy in order to contribute to the country’s growth within the context of sustainability.

The worldwide sugar industry presents a productive inertia and a fragile sustainability due to there are marginal advances in the productivity, productive diversification, and reduction of the environmental impact in cane crop fields, sugar factories, distilleries, and non-centrifuged sugar production. The complexity of sustainability evaluation in sugar industry is highlighted by the incorporation of many criteria including both quantitative and qualitative issues, measured by different units or at least the development of standards for benchmarking. The key to successful sustainability will ultimately depend on the progress in sugarcane productivity without increasing the cultivated area and decreases the environmental impacts without the lack of coordination between public policies, stakeholders, and markets which would have benefits and wellness on social, economic, and environmental aspects. The aim of this research was to carry out a review about the sustainability frameworks, indicators, constraints, and barrier to transit the sugar industry to sustainability. The results present opportunities and strengths of sugar industry related to 2030 agenda for sustainable development and circular economy as an useful guidance to formulate strategies to maximizing the potential of the sugar industry to a sustainable biofactory.
