The Salado and Verde streams constitute the two main seasonally available freshwater courses that flow into the Atlantic coast of the Río Negro province (continental Patagonia, Argentina, 42° South). This would have favored their use in the past as corridors for human circulation between the coast and the interior. This paper presents the results of the techno‐morphological and geochemical analyzes of the obsidian artifacts recovered in the area to constrain mobility. The results allow us to propose the existence of toolkit reconditioning or replacement activities and the identification of different sources of provenance of the obsidians (Sacanana, Telsen and Portada Covunco, distant up to 800 km from the study area), reinforcing the hypothesis of a coast‐inland circulation, with the possible existence of circuits of exchange of this raw material.

los conjuntos es muy baja, lo que es coherente con las expectativas formuladas a partir de la relación frecuencia esperable/distancia a la fuente, y sobre la base de la estructura de los recursos líticos, que ofrece otras materias primas en las cercanías de buena calidad para la talla. El análisis geoquímico indicó una mayor frecuencia de obsidiana del área Meridional, de variedades del grupo químico PDA (Pampa del Asador) y con menor frecuencia, del área Centro-Sur. La utilización de un sistema de información geográfica permitió estimar tres tipos de distancias entre el bajo y las fuentes de obsidiana: euclidiana, caminos óptimos y rutas utilizadas en el siglo XIX según fuentes etnohistóricas. En todos los casos la fuente más cercana es PDA, en el sector Meridional. Sin embargo, se detectó la sobrerrepresentación de estas obsidianas en relación a la distancia. Esto sugiere una conexión más intensa de los cazadores recolectores del Bajo de Sarmiento con el sector Meridional.Palabras claves: obsidiana, fuentes, circulación, Bajo de Sarmiento. We present new data on the geochemical characterization, frequency and circulation of obsidian artifacts from the Sarmiento basin (Chubut, Argentine Patagonia). The study area is far and equidistant from known obsidian sources in southern and center-southernPatagonia. There is a low frequency of obsidian for all assemblages, coherent with expectations based on the frequency/distance to source ratio, and based on the structure of the lithic resources, which offers other good quality knapping raw materials close to the basin. The geochemical analysis indicated that the highest frequency occurs in the southern area, particularly of varieties from the Pampa del Asador (PDA), and a lesser frequency occurs in the central-south. Using the Geographic Information System (GIS), we estimated three types of distances between the basin and obsidian sources: Euclidian, optimal roads, and roads used in the 19th century according to ethnohistoric documents. In all cases, the closest source is Pampa del Asador in the southern sector. Nevertheless, the results indicate an overrepresentation of these obsidian artifacts in relation to distance. This suggests a more intense connection between the hunter-gatherers of the Sarmiento basin and the southern sector.

The northern coast of the San Jorge Gulf, Atlantic Patagonia, is recognised as a marine biodiversity hot spot and is designated as a priority conservation area. Among marine mammals, three species of pinnipeds inhabit the region. While South American sea lions ( Otaria flavescens) have a higher abundance and a larger number of colonies than South American fur seals ( Arctocephalus australis), a few individuals of the Southern elephant seal ( Mirounga leonina) reside in the region. Nevertheless, little is known about the abundance and distribution of these pinnipeds before the 18th century, when various extractive activities became widespread, including the unregulated exploitation of furs and oil. This study aims to examine whether the distribution and relative abundance of ancient pinnipeds differ from present-day populations. To achieve this, we conducted inter-specific identification of pinniped bone remains coming from archaeological assemblages dated from 6000 to 600 14C years BP and reviewed historical sources to contrast these retrospective data with modern ecological literature. The results suggest changes over time in the relative abundances of species within the pinniped community. The relative abundance of fur seals was greater than or equal to that of sea lions in most Late-Holocene pinniped assemblages. Additionally, fur seals have been recorded in historical and Late-Holocene periods in places where they are currently very rare. These findings are consistent with the higher relative abundance of fur seals recorded in other archaeological sites along the Patagonian coast, suggesting that modern distribution and abundance have been heavily affected by commercial hunting. This study contributes to a better understanding of the nature and magnitude of the anthropic impact on the marine ecosystem of the northern coast of the San Jorge Gulf. It also provides historical baseline information to strengthen conservation policies and restoration efforts.
